Fashion’s a funny old world! One minute, a certain item is the most undesirable object ever imaginable and then the next, that self-same object is an absolute must-have!
Enter stage right, the slide sandal, in what would probably be its most recognisable form: the Adidas Adilette.
Hmm… Love it or loathe it? 🤔
If you’re at all like me, you will be thinking that this beach/bedroom sandal is synonymous with everything ugly and uncool (and especially when paired with socks…yeuch!!! 🤢).
But, according to the fash pack (since 2014 at least), we are oh so wrong in our thinking and these mannishly sporty slide sandals are, in actual fact, über cool.Embed from Getty Images
Grazia Germany’s fashion editor, Stephanie Morcinek, was snapped wearing them in Paris back in 2014
And three years later, they were still in with the super stylish peeps…Embed from Getty Images
German fashion blogger and influencer Lisa Hahnbueck was pictured wearing green velvet versions of the iconic slide in Berlin in 2017
Around the same time, celebrity sightings were also gathering momentum with models Gigi Hadid and Hailey Baldwin as well as actresses Dakota Johnson and Jessica Alba being spotted out and about in various versions of the slide.
Skip forward to this summer and slide sandals seem to be absolutely everywhere!
All my fave shops; Primark, H&M, Zara… all teeming with slides to the point that I was actually beginning to question the unquestionable, my deep-rooted slide disdain…
Could I have been… gulp… wrong in my judgement of these summer shoes?
Should I swap my sandals of the moment, my Primark Valentino-inspired studded thongs, for the (some might say… ugly) sandal of the moment?
And if I were to do so, would I be stepping over that very thin line into fashion victim territory? Yikes!
Valentino-inspired, Primark made ❤️
So, in order to make an informed decision, we’ll weigh up all the pros and the cons…
1. They have a reputation as being the ugly cousin of the flip-flop. (But since the fash pack doesn’t agree with this anymore, does this fact even count?!)
1. They’re super comfortable (especially the original Adidas versions, which mould themselves snugly to the feet…). With these, you can wave goodbye to the burning pain of foot blisters! Fashion without suffering? What’s not to love?!
2. All the major celebrities and Insta influencers have been wearing them lately. They can’t all be wrong, can they?
LA based British fashion blogger Louise Roe has been snapped in various versions recently…
Snakeskin! 😍 Beginning to wobble…
Black padded! Decidedly not frumpy!
Even Louise’s friend, Italian influencer Chiara Ferragni, gives the slide trend the nod of approval with her black Fendi sandals💓
3. As Chiara proves, you can also take this style high-end if the Adidas original is just too… well… sporty.
Slides by Givenchy? Now we’re talking….
4. They can actually look… pretty!
Look what I found in Topshop and Primark this week!
Mine, mine and mine… All mine! ❤️❤️❤️
Oh dear! It looks like I’ve stepped over to the dark side – I’ve invested in not one but three pairs of slides!!!
Does that make me a fashion victim now?
I’ll let you know in a couple of years…
(‘Please oh please, don’t let me live to regret this,’ she whispers. 😳 )
How do you feel about the latest slide trend? It would be so lovely to hear from you in the comments section below!
Until next time,
